Day 152: Teaching an old dog new tricks

changequote-2

I’m not a morning…never have been.  I barely like to rise early to catch flights for vacation, so rolling out of bed at home anytime before 6:30 isn’t high on my list of things to do.  But this morning, I got up at 5:30 am so I could be ready and onsite by 6:45 for an SUP yoga interview with Fox 59’s Sherman Burdette.

Sherman was a total sweetheart and made doing the interview easy…which is good because my brain isn’t always fully engaged that early.  But I have to admit, it was so peaceful listening to the birds and watching the sunrise that I started wondering why I don’t do mornings more often…

I think the biggest turnoff is the morning activity.  For years, rising early meant catching an early flight for work…or going to a breakfast meeting I didn’t really want to attend.  It might just be that the key to starting my day earlier is to plan morning activities I actually enjoy.  Novel concept, huh…

Mr. Universe has been asking me to run in the mornings with him before work.  I was adamant that I wouldn’t run before 6:45…but I like running…so maybe I could get up and knock it out before my day starts?  Am I really just learning this about myself at 41…

Maybe it took having a puppy to begin the transition of sleeping less…waking up earlier…and experiencing life through the eyes of a pup.

Mr. Universe brought Sheba to the taping so we could play in the water after.  Between tapings Sheba decided to jump in and take her first swim.  She was a natural…fearless.  You could see the pure joy in her eyes…until she got out a little too far and the joy started to turn to terror.  Princess Grace nabbed her up and put the dog on her paddle board and the fear immediately turned to gratitude and joy.

I’m guessing this is what it’s like for people with children….to watch them experience life through childlike eyes…pure fascination…and genuine curiosity.  That’s what it was like watching Sheba.

I’m going to try and take this with me into my mornings…my early mornings…and the rest of my day.  Maybe it’s not too late to teach an old dog (me) new tricks after all.  🙂
